IBIS - S
Interferometric Radar for the Remote Static and
Dynamic Monitoring of Structures

Applications :
Static monitoring:
• static testing
• monitoring of deformations and displacements overtime
• detection of structural displacements and deformations while under  construction
Dynamic monitoring:
• measurement of structure resonance frequency
• measurement of the vibration modes of structures

Main advantages
IBIS-S introduces a totally new method for the static and dynamic monitoring of structures, with significant advantages over traditional techniques (such as those based on accelerometers), including:
•  Remote sensing, without the need to access the structure;
•  Fast and easy to install; complete monitoring of the entire structure performed

   quickly (e.g.: an entire bridge can be dynamically monitored in less than an hour);
•  Provides a practically continuous mapping of the static and dynamic

   displacements of the entire structure;
•  Directly measures the structural displacements in real time, with an accuracy of

    between 1/100 and 1/10 of a millimetre;
•  Can follow and accurately measure both slow movements (as found in static

   monitoring) and fast transitory movements (dynamic monitoring) with frequencies

   up to 50 Hz.

IBIS-S is a revolutionary system based on microwave Interferometry for the remote static and dynamic monitoring of structures such as bridges, viaducts, dams, buildings, historical monuments and towers etc.

The radar beam of the apparatus illuminates the entire structure; the radar receiver then measures the signal reflected by the entire structure. The high resolution capacity over distance provided by the radar produces a displacement map showing the displacement of many points across the entire structure; in fact, the radar samples the structure about every 0.5 metres. In principle this is as if a vast number of sensors was applied to the structure, one every 50 centimetres (virtual sensors). In reality, the radar samples the structural displacements, “detecting” even very small structural “nonhomogeneities”, (indents, welds, bolts, etc.), Which are normally present in large numbers. If the objective is to sample the displacement of predefined points, passive radar reflectors can be applied to the points of interest:

Thanks to the microwave technology used, the radar can detect displacements of each point on the structure up to an oscillation frequency of 50 Hz, with a detection limit of less than 1/10 mm.
This great sensitivity in detecting displacements is due to the use of interferometry, measuring the phase differences of the radar waves reflected from each point of the structure. Each sub-millimetric displacement gives rise to a phase difference of the reflected wave, detectable by the Radar.

The monitoring procedure using IBIS-S
IBIS-S introduces a revolutionary approach to the procedures for the static and dynamic monitoring of structures
IBIS-S is a portable apparatus which can be installed in a few minutes at a distance of up to 1000 metres from the structure to be measured.
